Reading comprehension is important for students in every subject, because most of teaching learning materials consist of texts. Reading comprehension help students more concentrate and easier to grasp information from the book that they read. But the students at the ninth grade of SMPN 20 Merangin were passive and less interaction during the learning reading process. The students also got score under KKM. Through this research, the researcher purposed to apply Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) strategy and improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative text to complete their KKM by using this strategy. The researcher used a Classroom Action Research (CAR), because CAR is aimed to got an improvement in teaching process. The setting of the research was in SMPN 20 Merangin. The subject of this research was the ninth grade which is consisted of 20 students. The researcher did the research in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meeting. In evaluation the researcher used test to knowing the student progress especially in reading comprehension. The test was provided in reading text form which consisted also in 5 questions. The students should be answer the question based on the text. Based on the result of research, the researcher found that the average in pre-test was 59, average in cycle I was 68,75, and average in cycle II was 75,25. The result of pre-test showed there were 3 students or 15% reach KKM. In the cycle I, there were 10 students or 50% of students reach KKM’s score. Meanwhile, in cycle II there were 15 students or 75% of all the students’ number who reach the KKM. In addition, based on students’ observation in cycle I the average was 74%, then in cycle II was 87% students were active. So the researcher concluded that the application of Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) strategy has able to improved student’s reading comprehension at the ninth grade of SMPN 20 Merangin academic year 2018/2019. Then, based on this result the researcher suggested to the teacher to treats the students with different strategy to make students easy get new knowledge and solve the problems that faced in reading comprehension.
