READING, ENCODE, ANNOTATE AND PONDER (REAP) STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION AT THE TWELFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA N 18 MERANGIN ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/2019

Abstract

Reading comprehension help students more concentrate and easier to grasp information from the book that they read. Reading comprehension is involves constructing meaning that is reasonable and accurate by connecting what has been read to what the reader already knows and by thinking about all of this information until it is understood. But, based on the observation the researcher found the students’ reading comprehension at the twelfth grade students of SMA N 18 Merangin academic year 2018/2019 was low. Therefore, through this research the researcher wanted to know and to describe the improvement of students’ reading comprehension especially in narrative text material by using REAP strategy at the twelfth grade students social class of SMA N 18 Merangin academic year 2018/2019. This research designed by using Classroom Action Research. The setting of the research is twelfth grade students’ social class of SMA N 18 Merangin academic year 2018/2019. The subject of this research was the twelfth grade especially in class social that consist of 18 students. The object of this research was reading comprehension. Moreover, based on the syllabus at the twelfth grade students of SMA N 18 Merangin academic year 2018/2019 the material was about narrative text. In conducting the classroom action research, the researcher used the procedures of classroom action research whereas consisted of four steps, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In evaluate of this research, the researcher gave the test. The test that given was reading test especially short answer task reading. Based on the data from the research, the researcher found that Reading, Encode, Annotate and Ponder (REAP) strategy able to improve students’ reading comprehension especially in narrative text at the twelfth grade students class Social of SMA N 18 Merangin academic year 2018/2019. It proved by the students’ average in pre-test scores was 59.4, in cycle I was 68, and in cycle II was 77,2. Therefore, the researcher suggested to the students to improve reading comprehension optimally. The students must often practice about reading comprehension material or study with other friends
