THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS' AFFECTIVE AND ENGLISH LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT AT EIGHTH GRADE OF MTs N 5 MERANGIN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020

Abstract

This research was motivated by low students’ affective in the class. Based on observation and interview conducted by researcher on 16th of January 2019 at the seventh grade of MTs N 5 Merangin. There are several problems in this research, such as students not yet applying affective aspects of behavior, students sometimes said unfavorable words to classmates, raise legs on the table, ate while class time is in progress, and when teacher gave assignments there are some students who like to cheat their friends assignments. The researcher found still many students who have not applied the aspects of affective. Therefore, researcher conducted a correlation research between students' affective and English learning  achievement.


Type of research was used by researcher correlation quantitative research. the purpose of this research was to found the correlation between students' affective (variable x) and English learning achievement (variable y), which had been conducted in July to August 2019 at eighth grade of MTs N 5 Merangin. In this research, researcher provided the opportunity for all eighth grade A, B, C, and D as samples. The researcher used a questionnaire to found the affective value of students, based on nine affective aspects with 39 statements based on indicators of each aspect. Meanwhile, to get the value of English learning achievement, researcher asked directly with English teacher based on English learning achievement scores of each students.


Based on the results of research conducted by researcher in the hypothesis test used the correlation product moment formula, researcher found no correlation between the variable x and the variable y, which results from the research were only 0.098. Furthermore, the researcher conducted the test to determine the contribution of the correlation between students' affective and English learning achievement, the results of the research found, there was no contribution between variable x to variable y, the contribution obtained was 0%. Finally, the researcher conducted a  test aimed at calculated the significance test, from the results of this analyzed the researcher obtained a result of 0.088, that means the variable x and the variable y was not significant. in this research it can be found that the hypothesis of this research is  accepted, and rejected. It can be concluded, there is no correlation between students’ affective and English learning achievement at eighth grade of MTs N 5 Merangin.
