IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY BY USING UNINTERRUPTED SUSTAINED SILENT READING (USSR) STRATEGY AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 14 MERANGIN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of applying appropriate learning strategies in the process of learning to read descriptive texts of eighth grade students of SMPN 14 Merangin in Academic Year 2019/2020. Given the learning that has been carried out because it  has not provided maximum process and results, This gives the influence in the result of students’ reading ability showed that 24 students at the class, only 10 students who achieved score above the KKM that have been defined.  For this reason, research was conducted with the aim of Improving Students' Reading Ability by Using Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) Strategy at the eight grade of SMPN 14 Merangin Academic Year 2019/2020 which was carried out in class VIII A. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research conducted at SMPN 14 Merangin that located in Sungai Sahut Village, Hitam Ulu District of Merangin Regency. The subject of this research was the students at the eight grade of SMPN 14 Merangin in the academic year of 2019/2020. It consisted of 24 students. The test provided in multiple choice which consited of 20 questions. There were two result of this research, test result and observation result. Based on the result of the test, it showed that post test in cycle I was 50% reach KKM and in cycle II was 87,5% reach the KKM. In cycle II percentage of students reach KKM was complete. It can be concluded that the improvement was 37,5%. Analysis data above showed that the improvement of students classically was more complete and more 75% that was decision based on guided of teaching learning in SMPN 14 Merangin. Based on these findings, it can be stated that Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) Strategy can improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text at the eight grade of SMPN 14 Merangin in the academic year of 2019/2020.
