IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION BY USING FREE VOLUNTARY READING STRATEGY IN VIIB GRADE AT SMPN 19 MERANGIN ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/2019

Abstract

The aim of this research is to know the improvement of reading comprehension of VIIB Grade SMPN 19 Merangin academic year 2018/2019. There are several problems that faced by students. first, the students difficult to read the text. Second, they have low capability in comprehending the English text. Third, they thought reading English were difficult activity, because they have a limited vocabulary, so it makes difficult to read and comprehend the text.


This research was conducting by applied Classroom Action Research (CAR). CAR is the suitable strategy to improve learning process in the class. And consist of two cycle, each cycle has five steps: planning, action, observation, evaluation, and reflection. The purpose to known the improvement the students reading comprehension, and also aimed to find out how to apply FVR Strategy can improve students reading comprehension.


The result of the research show that students’ reading comprehension could improved. FVR Strategy has a positive impact to the students’ readingg comprehension. The total improvement of this research show that In the pre-test only 6 or 28,6% students reached the KKM, in the cycle I there were  9 or 42,8% students reached the KKM, and in the cycle II there were 17 or 81% students reached the KKM
